Lesson learned.

No pictures with this post.  Just a story about a friend of mine.  A friend, I say.

She has a newborn baby and the den is baby survival zone A.  It has a baby swing and vibrating infant seat.  There is a comfy couch for a sleeping parent, along with some cushy pillows and snuggly blankets.  It also has a TV and the laptop is in there so she will be entertained while she is up with the baby in the middle of the night.  The den is right next to the kitchen, which is baby survival zone B.  It has bottles and formula and snacks for a parent hungry in the middle of the night.

My friend’s den is on the other side of the house from the master bedroom.  Between the two is the all-glass front door.  It has a beautiful curtain which is never drawn.  She said twice this week around 8:30 she has had to answer the door in what she slept in the night before…clothes she would rather not answer the door in.  Why?  Because her options were to either go ahead and answer the door or walk past the door to the bedroom to change and be seen anyway.  So she just answered the door.

The first time it was the landscaper.  My friend said she was wearing a pair of her husband’s boxers and a t-shirt that says “I’M THAT GOOD.”  The second time it was the babysitter (not as bad) and my friend had on a white cotton granny nightgown with, you guessed it, black underwear beneath it!  NICE.  I laughed at my friend, ALOT.  So she has decided from now on to draw the curtain and keep a robe in the den just in case she forgets to do one of them she will have backup.

I am going to follow her lead.  I am sure glad I got to learn from someone else’s mistakes rather than my own on this one.  😉

11 days and counting

Well, we have been a family with two children for 11 days now.  What a trip!  Heidi is adjusting well.  Every morning and after nap time when she comes downstairs from her room she runs to Wyatt and hugs him and says “Aww” and I am pretty sure she said ”Wyatt” tonight.  This being said, she has told me “No, No” on more than one occasion, with EMPHASIS and finger pointing.  Michael and I are adjusting well too.  I have only cried once.  😉  Make that twice.  Sleep deprivation is an ugly beast.  Tonight was the second time.  I finished this blog entry.  It was four healthy paragraphs with however many pictures there are, which have to be entered one by one.  I changed the option from “save draft” to “publish now” and the whole thing disappeared, never to be found.  I guess I should have saved my draft before I asked it to publish.  So, lesson learned, the hard way…not my favorite way to learn.  I worked on it for two hours before it was complete.  That warrants tears.

I find myself sad that Wyatt is our last baby.  Head overrules heart on this one.  A girl and a boy.  A parent to child ratio of one to one.  But still my heart aches because Heidi is growing up and learning so much and Wyatt changes every day.  I enjoy every new stage and swell with pride at every milestone reached but will miss having a tiny baby who is at greatest peace in my arms.  Little Wyatt will not be little for long.  I am confident he will break the 10 lb. mark before his two week check up.  He eats like a champion!  Speaking of eating…thanks to all of our friends bringing meals, we are eating famously.  If you know me well then you know without these meals I would be living off of Diet Coke, frozen White Castle cheeseburgers and Little Debbie cakes and Michael would eat nothing but ice cream.

Gear…we need gear!  Well, just a double stroller.  Michael and I took both kids out to run a few errands on Monday with our single stroller.  Disaster for more than one reason.  It was close to Heidi’s nap but she had no interest in reclining and falling asleep in the seat.  I was carrying the infant carrier over my arm, which hurts after a while.  I never want to be the lady in the store with the wailing kid but, for 15 minutes, we were.  At least until Heidi and I had had enough.  We left with nothing but needed lots.  So, a double stroller is PRIORITY ONE!  Now, show me the list where every person who has ever used a double stroller votes for their favorite and the one with the most votes gets elected #1 Stroller Bar-None.  I am too tired to do the research and want to love the one I buy.  I’m not picky…I just want one that does it all!  Seats that recline to multiple positions, including flat and can face each other, face forward, face rear, fit back to back (in case of kid spat involving kicking).  I want it to accommodate an infant seat until we aren’t using one anymore.  I want the canopies to be adjustable and have mesh for the breeze to pass through and vinyl windows at the top for me to peek in.  I want the foot rests to be adjustable so the kids’ knees aren’t in their chests and I want snack trays with cup holders for me and for each kid!  I want it to fit through doors and in store aisles and to turn like a barrel racing horse in a competition on TV.  They have these in RandiLand, but the Princess has been away for a long time.  Do they have them here?

Here are some more pics of Wyatt’s first week on earth, Heidi’s first week as an older sibling and our first week as parents to two children.  Enjoy!

Play time has changed a little.

Nap time has changed a little too.

Some things remain the same….Heidi continues to be too cool for words.

Michael is not the only one to enter a food coma after eating anymore.

The men are bed bugs and the girls are not.  Not to worry, we got Wyatt a blue miracle blanket the next day!

YaYa gave Heidi some fancy rain boots, which she LOVES!  All of the Moritz women love shoes!

She even sported them when she went outside with YaYa to see how Daddy and Grandy did fishing.

She was glad when Wyatt and I joined her outside.

Hugging is her specialty.

Wyatt was all tuckered out after a second day of fishing!  Just kidding!  But he was kind enough to pose for a picture with some of the fish Grandy and Daddy caught on their second day out.

Right now he finds the paci more exciting than fishing!  (But not for long!)

Grandy and YaYa hated to leave, but they will be back soon!

Wow!  Now ain’t that something?!

Heidi Meets Wyatt

Heidi was fast asleep when we returned home from the hospital last Monday night with Wyatt so we decided to introduce her to her little brother when she woke Tuesday morning.  Princess that she is, her reaction to him was no less than perfect.  When she first saw him, she said “Awww.”  She immediately picked out her beloved tiara and blocks to share with him.  Hugs were freely given and she was genuinely happy with him.  Michael and I could not have been more pleased and found ourselves a little surprised.  At 14 months, she is still a baby and the world has certainly revolved around her.  Shame on us for even wondering if she would handle it well, she handles everything well and with a smile on her face.

However, she is not above stealing his paci and seeing him with a bottle really hurts her feelings.  She has taken a sippy cup with water for some time now but is only 9 weeks off of her bottle with milk and is limited to having her paci at naptime and bedtime now.  Needless to say, they are gone but not forgotten.

She snuggles up…for a few seconds…

and poses for the camera…

and gives Daddy sugar.

Naturally, being a baby is hard work, especially being a little brother.  When he is awake, he is wide awake, taking in the sights and sounds.  When he is asleep, he is sound asleep.  Like our Heidi, he is precious either way.

And then there were TWO…

Today was a joyous day for our family!  We grew to include a wonderful blessing from God, a son.  He is a chosen child, just like Heidi and we are overwhelmed with love for him and for the two people that gave him life.  Wyatt Moritz Dunlap was born on August 29th, a special day he shares with my sister, Keira, Michael’s cousin Chris’ daughter, Elizabeth, and my great-grandmother!  He weighs 8 pounds, 4 ounces and is 20 inches long.  He has reddish-blonde hair and a good amount of it and presently his eyes are blue.  Heidi is sure to be surprised in the morning when she wakes up to find a special delivery of a little brother was made while she slept!

Stay tuned…

August, Shmaugust….it is TOO HOT!

It may have been hot outside but Heidi was COLD BUSTED inside!  The temptation of trying to get into a “restricted zone” (Michael’s office) proved too strong for her!  She was so proud of herself….managed to get a few minutes nakey and found a way to get to the buttons on the answering machine!  If you are waiting for us to return your call, you’d better call back because she successfully located the erase button!

Cheryl came over and furthered Heidi’s education of “BLING”.  This week’s lesson, The Difference Between Real and Costume.  She picked it up right away, smart girl that she is!

Just once this month she didn’t get her way…. 🙂

but the tears didn’t last long…

and just like her Daddy, spaghetti makes anything all better!

Stay tuned for more August!  A lot can happen in a few days!

TODDLER ATTACKED BY VICIOUS TROUT AT LOCAL AQUARIUM

Today we went with our friend Natalie and her daughter, Eliza, to the aquarium.  Both Heidi and Eliza love looking at all of the fish and other wildlife the aquarium has to offer.  There are touch tanks and non-touch tanks.  To my dismay, Heidi is tall enough to put her had atop the rim of one of the non-touch tanks and, unfortunately, put her little fingers into the water.  Sadly, the trout are hungry and find her fingers just as sweet and delicious as I do.  Yes, she cried.  Yes, there was blood, just a little.  Fortunately, a yummy snack put in her hand by Natalie made the tears subside.  I guess ”FOOD IS THERAPY” starts at a young age.
